The Department of Public Safety utilizes a community policing model to support our university’s vision, mission, and guiding values. As public-safety professionals, we are sworn to support and uphold the university’s policies, regulations, and state and federal laws. As the face of Norwich University, the Department of Public Safety has the objective to be helpful and responsive, and serve as an important community resource.

The Norwich University Department of Public Safety provides a 24-hour physical security presence, 365 days a year.

Staying Safe on Campus: A Guide for Families

Department of Public Safety

The cost of parking for 2023-2024 is $425.00 for a year and $212.50 for a semester. Once registrations are sold out, you must email the Chief of the Public Safety to be put on a waitlist and wait to be notified. You must apply within 24 hours of being notified. Once the permit is processed, you will be notified to pick it up at the Public Safety Office. Parking permits will not be prorated on a monthly or daily basis. Permits will be sold on an Annual or Semester basis only and can only be refunded on a semester basis, or otherwise as directed by the Administration. Fall Permits will only be issued for special circumstances and approved by the Chief of Public Safety.

NOTE: The ability to register a vehicle is not guaranteed. Everyone needs to register no matter what your position or relationship is to the University. The number of student registrations issued may be subject to change, dependent upon the availability of student parking. Students working for the university are not eligible for an employee permit.

Norwich Public Safety offers shuttles and escorts 24 hours a day on campus for students and employees, whether you need assistance because of a medical condition or you do not feel safe walking across campus alone. These shuttles are conducted by selected students and Public Safety Officers. If you are in need of a ride or are concerned for your safety walking alone, please call us, and we'll get you there safely.

 

 

Campus Security Authority Reporting Form

What are Timely Warnings? In compliance with the “Timely Warning” provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act of 1998, Norwich University issues timely warnings to the entire campus community when there is information that a Clery Act Crime has occurred on or near the University that is considered by the institution to represent a serious or continuing threat to campus safety.

The Chief of Public Safety or designee, in consultation with University senior leadership, makes the decision whether to issue a timely warning on a case-by-case basis in light of all the facts surrounding the incident. Timely warnings are issued as soon as possible after the Department of Public Safety is notified; however, the release of the warning is subject to the availability of accurate facts concerning the incident.

Criteria to be evaluated may include:

  • The nature of the crime

  • The continuing danger to the campus community
  • The possible risk of compromising law enforcement efforts

Timely warnings include information that promote safety and would aid in the prevention of similar crimes, including, but not limited to:

  • Brief description of the crime(s) that occurred

  • Date and time when the crime(s) occurred
  • Location of the crime(s)

  • Possible connections between incidents (if applicable)
  • Description of suspect(s) and/or any available information to aid in the apprehension of the offender(s) (if applicable)

  • Recommended actions
  • Precautions for the campus community to protect itself

  • Description of crime reporting options at the University

Timely warnings are issued to the University community through one or more electronic communications, including, but not limited to: my.norwich.edu, university e-mail with the assistance of the Director of Communications or designee, the Department of Public Safety’s webpage, and/or social media outlets.

Every effort is made to prevent identifying victims of crime.
