2009 Colby Award Winners
The harrowing account of the ambush of a Navy Seal team in the mountains of Afghanistan and a sweeping narrative of the modern battlefield through the eyes of a seasoned war reporter in Iraq have won the 2009 Colby Award.
Dexter Filkins
The Forever War (Knopf 2008), by Dexter Filkins, recounts the stark reality of war with the skill and moderated temperament of a seasoned foreign correspondent, deftly merging all aspects of the action from the streets of Baghdad to the desert and all points between. Filkins presents a first-hand account of the effects of the war on every faction of the population.
Marcus Luttrell
In his memoir, Lone Survivor (Little, Brown and Company 2007), Marcus Luttrell provides a frank and fast-paced account of his early life, Navy Seal training, and the events surrounding the mission in March 2005 that cost the lives of Luttrell’s teammates on Seal Team 10. At the heart of this incredibly intense combat story is the struggle for survival in shadow of the loss of his comrades.
The Colby Award recognizes a first work of fiction or non-fiction that has made a significant contribution to the public’s understanding of intelligence operations, military history or international affairs. The award will be presented on behalf of the members of the Colby Circle by co-founder Carlo D’Este and Colby’s son, Paul Colby, on March 26, 2009 at Norwich University, the nation’s oldest private military college, in Northfield, Vt.
