Norwich Wins Season Opener At Mt. Ida, 27-17
NEWTON, Mass. – Junior running back Darnell Jackson rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown, and Dan Wilde returned a punt for a score as the Norwich football team defeated Mt. Ida, 27-17, Saturday afternoon at Mt. Ida Athletic Stadium.
Norwich (1-0) overcame a 17-13 fourth quarter deficit, scoring the final 14 points of the contest. The Cadets improve to 8-0 all-time versus the Mustangs.
Jackson scored his touchdown on a two-yard run with 2:23 remaining in the third quarter, giving Norwich its first lead of the game at 13-10. Mt. Ida came right back with a touchdown of its own, giving the Mustangs a 17-13 advantage early in the fourth quarter.
Norwich regained the lead for good at the 10:06 mark of the fourth quarter when junior quarterback Andy Holz hooked up with sophomore wide receiver E.J. Flannigan on a 15-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-and-10 play.
Wilde put the game away for the Cadets as the sophomore defensive back returned a punt 35 yards for a touchdown with 5:44 left to play.
Norwich kicker Chris Seifert provided all of the offense for the Cadets in the first half as the sophomore connected on a pair of field goals. The first half was a defensive struggle that featured a total of four turnovers. Mt. Ida took a 7-6 lead into halftime.
The Norwich football team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 8, when the Cadets kick off their home slate by hosting St. Lawrence in the team’s Homecoming Game at Sabine Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
