Math placement exam
Congratulations on your admission to Norwich University!
The purpose of this page is to inform you of the procedures that Norwich follows in determining placement in your first mathematics course. Mathematics is a highly cumulative subject, and it is very important to start in the correct course. Since almost every program of study at Norwich requires some mathematics, we want to make sure that you start in the course that will give you the greatest opportunity for success. Every entering student is required to take the Norwich University Mathematics Placement Exam before arriving on campus, even if your major does not require a mathematics course in the first semester. This procedure ensures that you will enroll in the most appropriate mathematics course for your level of preparation. Students that do not take the mathematics placement exam will be enrolled in Mathematics 005 for the Fall 2010 semester.
Soon you will receive a packet of information from Norwich giving your my.norwich.edu email account name, student identification number and password. From there you will want to follow these steps to take your Math Placement Exam:
- Go to my.norwich.edu
- Enter your network username with Norwich in all caps and a forward slash before the network username provided to you in the letter from IT. For example NORWICH\aschwarz
- Enter your network password as provided in the letter from IT
- Click on the Banner Web tab near the top of the page
- Enter your network username, this time without the NORWICH\
- Enter your network password
- Click on Student Services
- Click on Mathematics Placement Exam and you are finally there!
You should take the placement exam within two weeks of receiving this packet and at the latest by June 1, so that your advisor and the Mathematics Department will know which courses you will be eligible for before you arrive on campus.
If you are unhappy with your exam score, you have the ability to go back in and take the test a second time. We will count your best score when planning your enrollment for the fall.
Within 72 hours of taking the exam your score will appear in Banner Web under Student Services, Mathematics Placement Exam. If you have difficulty finding your score please contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@norwich.edu or 1.802.485.2456.
Again, welcome to Norwich, and good luck in your studies.
Sincerely,
Gerard T. LaVarnway
Chair, Department of Mathematics
