What to Expect
FLC Training
Be prepared for an intense training environment! During the first week of training, a typical day beings at 5:30 a.m. and includes morning physical fitness training, followed by three training sessions that range from one to four hours. The morning and afternoon sessions focus on individual and team skills. Activities include rappelling, orienteering, paintball, first aid and crisis preparedness. Evening sessions focus on interactive classroom instruction in Leadership Methods, Traits and Principals, and Effective Communications.
The second week of camp builds on the skills developed during the first. Participants confront physical challenges including climbing and rappelling the cliffs of Deer Leap Mountain. Participants experience and learn wilderness survival skills during a three-day “in the woods” overnight exercise. These skills are then put to the test during the Team Challenge Course. Teams spend their final days competing in the Olympic Challenge Course, a drill competition and skit night!
Recognizing Achievement
On the day before departure, participants enjoy a day of swimming, canoeing and kayaking at Lake Elmore. Participants are welcome to relax, play horseshoes or volleyball, or hike up Mount Elmore and enjoy the scenic views provided by the 219-acre lake while the camp director and staff prepares a barbeque lunch.
Families and friends are invited to attend at small graduation ceremony at 9 a.m. on the final day of camp. Individual and team awards are presented and Honor and Distinguished graduates are named. This is a great opportunity for participants to exchange contact information so they can stay in touch.
Learning from Experience
Upon arrival, participants are divided into eight, ten-person teams. Each participant will serve as “team leader” for one day and be evaluated on their overall performance. Approximately one month after the completion of FLC, the camp director and staff will mail each participant a written evaluation critiquing their performance based on such factors as day-to-day leadership, integrity, maturity and confidence.
