Student papers review service
Bringing papers to the LSC for review — make your time work for you!
- Look at your course syllabus and plan to see tutors well ahead of due dates.
- Try to make appointments to work on more than one draft, and try to leave time for checking the mechanics of your writing. It is always a good idea to start the process with a session for pre-drafting — talking over ideas and how to set up the paper — before you start: this can save you valuable time later on!
- Try to clear up any confusion you might have about your assignment with your professor first before your LSC tutorials start.
- Expect to discuss the content of your essay as well as the structure and writing mechanics. Understand that if we can’t follow your line of thought, your professor won’t be able to, either.
- Bring all drafts of essays typed and double spaced or clearly printed/handwritten. Typed is usually preferred, as processed text is easier to read and write comments on. You will have much more time with your tutor if your text is easy to read.
- LSC tutors will help you to edit your writing. Be aware that proofreading is not the same thing as editing. Proofreading is someone “correcting” your writing for you. Editing is identifying problems that need correction. This is a process in which you pay close attention to possible options for improving what you have written. Tutors can’t “fix” your papers, but can show you how to do it.
- Understand that merely coming to the LSC once will not guarantee a better grade. We have found, though, that most students gradually improve with regular LSC help.
- Writing is something you will have to do all your life, no matter what kind of work you end up doing. Learning to write well now will ensure that you have success in your NU courses and beyond!
