McIntyre hired as NU football team new offensive coordinator

By Chase Decker
Norwich Guidon Staff Writer

Norwich alumnus Shawn McIntyre, Class of 1998, from Milford, MA, was an easy choice for the new offensive coordinator coaching position. He had played and worked with Norwich football in previous years, so he already has been exposed to the offensive system, according to the Norwich coaching staff.

The current head football coach for Norwich University, Mike Yesalonia, refers to McIntyre as the “perfect hire,” because he has had previous coaching experience at Norwich.

“When I got here, he was an injured player that was volunteering as a student assistant,” Yesalonia remembers.

McIntyre had played two years for the Norwich football team, until a back injury ended his career. But McIntyre’s dedication to the Norwich football team was far from over. After his injury, McIntyre worked with the football coaching staff for three years; eventually, he was hired as a part-time staff member when he was a senior.

Before returning to Norwich, McIntyre was an assistant coach for programs such as Amherst College and Assumption College. McIntyre was a late pick up, hired July 1st of this year. “McIntyre knows exactly what athletics means to Norwich, and what exactly the job entitles, better than anyone, besides another grad,” Yesalonia explained.

“He’s a get it done kind a guy,” according to Eric Murphy, 22, a senior communications major from Fairhaven, VT. “He brings a lot of intensity to the offense,” Murphy said.

“He knows the offense inside and out, and being a former player from Norwich really helped, because he understands the Norwich football tradition,” praises Marcus Adames, 19, a sophomore, criminal justice major, from Milford, PA.

McIntyre played as an offensive lineman at Norwich for the same offense that Coach Yesolonia directed. “A lot of the stuff I do is really what I learned from Coach Yesolonia; he was the first coach I worked for,” remarks McIntyre on his coaching skills. “I enjoy positive interaction with them, but I am a very intense coach.”

The Norwich football team is currently 4-1, just coming off a tough loss to Alfred University. Their next game is home against Ithaca College, October 9.
