NU Div. III hockey championship ring symbolizes team's win

By Arthur Joia
Norwich Guidon Staff Writer

It's a memory still close for the Norwich community: the Norwich hockey team Div. III win last spring. And a permanent reminder for each player was awarded to them in August: the championship ring.

Lynn Beedle, 25, a senior communications major from Bethlehem, Penn. said the rings "are designed with the team's record, 27-3, the Norwich Seal, the NCAA Trophy. Beedle added that "it says 'NCAA Champions' around the top, with NU in the middle surrounded by diamonds."

Beedle described the rings as "a little smaller than the rings corps members receive their junior year."

Hockey team member Phil Aucoin, a senior communications major from Chelmsford, Mass., said, "the win was a great milestone for my life."

The Cadets have a sign in the locker room that reads, "Want it, earn it, take it." When designing the ring, they decided to engrave that phrase on the inside of the rings, making it even more unique from the rings in the past.

The Cadets' victory over Oswego 2-1 on March 22, 2003 was quite "relieving" Beedle said. This victory gave Norwich its second title in four years, and the team was recognized on June 27 at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass.

The cadets have started their pre-season training to defend their title for the upcoming 2003/2004 season.

Head Coach and Assistant Athletic Director Michael McShane said, "this is an experienced team, and the heart of our scoring is back."
