In The NewsFebruary 13, 2003 Area resorts offer low, special rates for college studentsBy Matthew Anderson Early snow falls kick start this winter's skiing, snow boarding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing seasons at many local resorts which offer low priced season passes for college students. Jason Carriveau, 20, a freshman sports medicine major from East Montpelier, Vt. said, "I can't wait to start snow boarding at Bolton Valley this year. I already got my season pass and can't wait to hit the slopes." Bolton Valley Ski resort is located off Bolton Valley Access road, Bolton Valley, Vt. And the number to get more information on Bolton Valley Ski Resort is (1-877-9BOLTON). You can also find Bolton Valley Resort on the web at (www.boltonvalley.com). A student can get a season pass to Bolton Valley to either ski or snowboard for $399 that covers from the opening date of Nov. 29, 2002 until the close, whenever the snow ends. Another plus to Bolton Valley is that there are no black-out dates for your season pass. "I choose to buy a season pass to Bolton every year, because there is just a variety of things to do such as skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, Bolton is the only mountain in Central Vermont that offers all four types of winter sports as far as I know" said Carriveau. Bolton Valley also offers a season pass for Nordic cross-country skiing for $199. This pass only covers cross-country skiing. Andrew Berry, 19, a sophomore biology major from Berlin, Vt. said, "I enjoy cross-country skiing, because it is an awesome cardiovascular workout that keeps me in shape for football and also because it is just relaxing gliding across that snow enjoying the outdoors." Bolton Valley also has the opportunity to snowshoe, which isn't offered at any of the other local ski resorts in the area. Renting snowshoes costs $15 a day, and there are many different types of guided snowshoe packages offered at Bolton Valley. The snowshoe packages vary in price depending on the level of experience a person has. Mark Winker, 22, a senior communications major from Brentwood, Tenn. said, "I'm very experienced in the art snowshoeing and prefer it to the other types of winter sports, because snowshoeing allows you to enjoy the nature you see, not like skiing where you rip down a mountain at 35 miles an hour." Bolton Valley isn't the only ski resort in central Vermont to offer good prices on season passes. Killington Resort is one of the most well known ski resorts in the North East. Killington Resort offers seven mountains available to ski on that include two hundred trails, thirty-one lifts, and eighty-seven miles of skiing fun from the novice to the experienced. Killington Resort is located at 4763 Killington road, Killington, Vt. And the phone number for information is (800-621-MTNS). You can also find Killington Resort on the web at (www.killington.com). Killington Resort Skiing was ranked Best in Region for quality snow surfaces in 2001-2002 "(www.killington.com)." Rob Hammer, 22, a senior criminal justice major from Albany, NY. said, "I have had a season pass to Killington ever since my sophomore year here at Norwich in my opinion Killington is the best skiing in the Northeast, plus if you get the early bird pass it is one of the cheaper places to ski." Killington offers a college season pass for $369 if you get it before Oct. 28, 2002. If you missed the early bird special, you will have to pay $499. Killington also offers a special package deal for $599 that allows you to not only ski Killington Resort but also other Eastern American Skiing Company resorts such as Mount Snow in Vermont, Attitash Bear Peak in New Hampshire, and Sunday River and Sugar Loaf in Maine. Kevin Sheridan, 22, a junior political science and English major from Glastonbury, Conn. said, "I'm going to get the combination pack this year that Killington offers so I can ski at several different resorts across the Northeast it is such a great deal I just can't pass it up." Stowe Mountain Resort is another great resort to get a season pass. A season pass for a college student is $359, if bought before the date of Oct. 23, 2002. If you missed the early bird special, it will still be cheaper than if you had missed the Killington early bird special because Stowe's late season pass is $489. "I didn't get my season pass to Stowe during the early bird special but I still plan on getting my pass before Christmas break, the reason I choose to ski at Stowe resort is because the scenery is beautiful as can be plus the town of Stowe is a great place to spend the day," said Matthew Meehan, 21, a junior criminal justice major from Stanhope, N.J. Stowe Mountain Resort is located at 5781 Mountain road, Stowe, Vt. The number to Stowe is (802-253-3500) you can also find them on the web at (www.stowe.com). Sugarbush ski resort is also another one of Central Vermont's great places to ski and snowboard. Sugarbush offers one hundred and twelve trails, eighteen lifts, and four hundred and thirty two acres of skiing terrain. Sugarbush Resort is located at 2405 Sugarbush Access road, Warren, Vt. And their phone number is (800-53SUGAR) they can also be found on the web at (www.sugarbush.com). Sugarbush Resort opened for skiing and snowboarding on Nov. 29, 2002, the day after Thanksgiving. A college season pass to Sugarbush Resort costs $399 and the pass has no black out dates. "I'm not getting a pass to Sugarbush this year, because I am graduating in December, but if I wasn't graduating until May I would have gotten one," said Steven Wendell Morse Jr., 25, a senior criminal justice major from Lewiston, Maine. "It is just a great deal, and the ski season is long. You can't go wrong with getting a season pass," Morse said. |
