NU students tackle Green Mountain Experience in Vermont outdoors

Jonathan Elliott went kayaking in late October with the Green Mountain Experience as part of his classes.

"I had to take it for one of my classes," said Elliott, 20, a sophomore sports medicine major from Toms River, N.J. "It was kayaking, and I said, 'I can do that.'"

Green Mountain Experience is a program that is set up by the Norwich University Activity Council to get Norwich students outside and use some of the resources that the state of Vermont has to offer.

"People travel from thousands of miles around to come to Vermont to go skiing, biking, hiking, mountain climbing," said Jenifer Hasenfus, the international student advisor, from Montpelier, Vt.

What the Green Mountain Experience is doing is taking different activities that are in different seasons in Vermont and allowing students to explore the activities.

"It was more of an introduction to moving water," said Elliott.

The trip was a full day and cost $10. The school hired a guide from a local business to help with the trip, and they kayaked down the Lamoille River.

Anthony Kania, 20, a sophomore biology major from Wallingford, Conn., climbed Mt. Mansfield with Green Mountain Experience. It cost him nothing. The option of taking the gondola to the top of the mountain and back down was offered at an extra cost.

"We took a black diamond trail up the mountain," said Kania.

There were many different trails that could have been climbed. After climbing to where the ski lift drops off skiers, the group then took a more rugged trail to the summit, according to Kania.

"We were able to see Lake Champlain and the surrounding mountains," said Kania.

When they were at the top of the mountain, a glider flew overhead that was so close that they could almost touch it. That made the trip that much more memorable, according to Kania.

For the winter many different activities are available, such as dogsledding, snowshoeing, and skiing. On Sundays, a bus takes students to the Sugarbush ski resort. According to Hasenfus, it does not matter whether or not they have ever skiied before.

"The skiing on Sunday is $48 for the pass," said Hasenfus, "It's really cheap, because most day passes right now in Vermont run about $60."

For the spring, many of the fall activities will be available, along with white water rafting, according to Hasenfus.

"We are thinking of going up to Maine to some of the rivers," said Hasenfus.

"You need to watch for the announcements which are usually on CLiC, and if they are not on CLiC, they are posted up in Student Activities," said Hasenfus. "We would love to have students give their input on what was a great program."

"I would go on another [activity]," Elliott said, "if I have a free day, and I can go skiing, and I have the money, I'll go."
