Dear Editor:
I believe that the mess hall should be open for the same hours
on the weekends that it is open during the week. I oftentimes wake
up on Saturday and Sundays morning, much before 9:30 a.m. because
I am hungry. Although, I cannot go to get something to eat until
that time because the hours are made as to have only two meals during
these two days. For college kids who are still growing, this does
not seem to be enough. Especially considering that much of the activity
that takes place throughout the week seems to be a combined effort
over Saturday and late Sunday night. Other schools, that cost much
less to attend, are open very early in the morning, all the way
to very late at night, seven days a week. Especially at a campus
that is so far from just about anything else in the world, including
restaurants, it makes it a very difficult task to drive somewhere
else just to eat, especially if you do not have a car, or cannot
leave as in the case of the freshmen.
I know that as far as finance is concerned, as a college student,
I don't have enough money to afford to go out to eat every single
weekend. I am sure that the same can be said for other students
who live on the Norwich campus. I know that the money we pay each
semester for food should be able to cover the cost of having three
square meals, seven days a week. It is pretty clear that the reason
the hours are made in this way is to increase the revenue for the
mill, on these days. However, once again I don't think this is fair
for the students who can't afford to fork up cash to get a meal
in between 12 and 5 o'clock.

It is hard to believe that your final exams are already approaching.
It certainly has been a fast fall semester, and I feel it has been
a wonderful one, as well. All of you should be proud of your individual
as well as collective accomplishments. You have a well-trained and
now recognized Cadet freshman class who are learning about our traditions,
and the power of being united as fellow members of the Corps of
Cadets. Our residential life experiences for civilian residential
students are growing every day, as are our community service opportunities
for both lifestyles, ensuring that we stay connected with our external
community. We have just concluded an exciting fall sports season,
with special recognition going to our men's rugby and football teams,
and are now gearing up for a busy winter sports schedule.
Spring will be here before we know it. Enjoy the holiday season!
It will be a well-deserved break from your studies. To our faculty
and staff -- thank you for all that you do for our students every
day. I look forward to everyone returning well-rested and excited
to start another academic term in 2004. Please make sure each of
you go back to your home high school and thank a teacher who did
a great job in preparing you for college. Also let them know where
you think they may have failed in that preparation (do not forget
your own role in that!) Finally, consider using this time to recruit
the next group of rooks and freshmen for Norwich for next year.
Happy Holidays!

Dear Editor:
I would just like to take this opportunity to commend NUAC and
S-5 on their hard work this past semester. They planned some fantastic
activities to keep us bored students entertained. There was everything
from comedians to hypnotists, and, considering the diversity at
our school, they did a great job scheduling something for everyone.
I recently attended next semester's planning meeting, and I couldn't
believe the amazing activities that are going to be happening in
the next few months. Nobody on this campus will have any excuse
to say, "I'm bored!" If they do, they just aren't looking
hard enough. All they have to do is check out Dole Auditorium on
Friday and Saturday nights.
Anyway, I just wanted to let NUAC and S-5 know that I appreciate
their hard work and the work of all the clubs on campus who help
to run activities. I am looking forward to the weekends next semester!

As the snow starts falling fast, students have to wonder how long
it will be until all this wonderful snow is removed, hopefully before
there are any injuries. We understand that the facilities and operation
crews on campus try their hardest to clear the roads and walkways.
There is always room for improvement, and definitely always more
work waiting. But it is in the true Norwich spirit to monopolize
on this and have some fun. Events such as the spring semester snow
sculptures, UP 500, and impromptu sledding parties are all tribute
to the creative spirit that allows us to ignore the cold and wet
and have some fun.
Facilities does the best they can to remove snow and ice from walkways.
Other areas, however, may not get much attention because of lack
of personnel to clear it. If so, enjoy it as best you can. Go sliding
down a hill behind one of the dorms and take a break from studying.
Winter has a lot of simple fun to offer.
