Savoy Theater thrives because of its unique appeal

In today's society, being independent and one-of-a-kind is the fashion, and though that hasn't always been the case, this approach helps keep everything from clothes to businesses fresh. In Montpelier, a local theatre has realized that this is the key to staying in business.

During the day, the small, somewhat hidden theater is almost invisible to passers-by. But once night comes and the neon sign that is reminiscent of something out of old Hollywood shines, it can't be missed.

"The Savoy is unique," said Elysha Nelson, 20, a senior communications major from Lunenburg, Vt. "It's something different to do besides the traditional movie theater."

"It's definitely cozier than a regular theatre, plus it has an atmosphere," said Meghan Hunt, 21, a senior psychology major from Groveton, N.H. "It's a nice place to go on a first date or with a bunch of friends."

The Savoy, located in Montpelier, is both a movie theater and video store. The theater shows mostly independent films but not entirely, according to the storeowner.

"What really makes it interesting is that usually the movies that they show aren't movies that you have already seen the trailers for twenty-seven times on television," Nelson said. "It makes it more of a surprise."

In the past, going to the movies was something special. Nowadays, movie theaters have become impersonal with their expensive tickets, massive, multiple theaters, and snack counters containing every piece of junk food a cavity ever dreamed of.

"It's such a small little theater, there aren't as many seats as there are in mainstream theaters, so it feels more like watching a movie at home," said Nelson.

"It feels different than regular theatres," Hunt said. "There are two brick walls, and the seats feel a little like armchairs, which is always nice when you're in the mood to just curl up and watch a movie."

By offering an at-home environment and a fresh type of movie, the Savoy is able to change Friday night plans for those who get a taste of what there is to offer.

"The Savoy's atmosphere is so different than other theaters, I would definitely go back again if there are more movies that I am interested in seeing," Nelson said.

"I would definitely go back, especially if they play more movies like 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'," Hunt said. "I loved that movie, and I had such a great time watching it at the Savoy."
