Norwich nominates Tracy Roy for Rhodes Scholar

By Kyle Blaikie
Norwich Guidon staff writer

Tracy Roy, 21, a senior sports medicine major and a NUCC first lieutenant from Fryeberg, Maine, is this year's Rhodes Scholar Nominee for Norwich University.

"I like getting recognized," Roy said. "To be nominated for this is one of the greatest honors that I have got in my life, but I like it better when I'm recognized for the accomplishments of people I've led instead of just me."

With a high academic workload, Roy found herself at the bottom of the selected nominees because of her GPA of 3.5.

"I didn't even plan on going to my board," Roy said. "The only reason I went was because a friend really wanted me to."

Besides being a sports medicine major and a double minor in biology and physical education, Roy believes her strengths go beyond just her academics.

"I think that they chose me because I was brutally honest with my answers during the board," Roy said. "I think boards are fun. Where [else] can someone ask you something and have to listen to you without interruption or rebuttal?"

Roy is the recipient of a full Army scholarship. She will receive a commission in May. Her position in the AROTC cadet battalion is battalion commander, the highest-ranking Army cadet at Norwich.

In the NU Corps of Cadets, she is a platoon leader for the freshmen of the regiment's Band Company. This is the third year Roy has acted as Cadre. She said that the training of freshmen was one of her proudest accomplishments at Norwich.

"I wouldn't want to be in the Rook Book for being a Rhodes Scholar," Roy said. "I would want it to be for my years of dedicated work as cadre. I would actually rather see my freshmen in the rook book for their hard work."

As a member of the corps' Band Company for over three years, Roy has learned to play several different instruments. Roy said she now plays both the first clarinet in the regimental band and the tenor sax in the Norwich Grenadiers Jazz Band.

"I play rugby for myself," Roy said. "That's about it."
